What is Arteriography?Arteriography is basically used for diagnosing a stroke. Generally called coronary angiography, the process of Arteriography includes the injection of a dye visible by X - ray into the blood flow of the patient. The dye is injected into the bloodstream of the patient and X - ray picture are taken and studied to figure out which arteries are damaged. These pictures are known as angiograms. Arteriography is used to help doctors evaluate the number and severity of the arteries block that supply blood to the heart.
The Arteriography of the cerebra throws light on the extent and the location of plaque buildups in the major arteries that supply blood to the vein. This helps the doctors in evaluating the cerebrovascular diseases that ultimately result in a stroke. Arteriography plays an important part in the evaluation of any cerebrovascular diseases in the patients that are at a high risk of stroke. Even though it is the best possible solution it has its drawbacks too. It may lead to some complications such as the patient may suffer a stroke during the process of coronary angiography i.e. Arteriography, or the patient may suffer a stroke within a few hours after the angiography. Arteriography also has its pros and cons and may vary from patient to patient. Therefore the patient and the physician must discuss the situation and must decide whether any further treatment is necessary or not. To discuss this situation the pictures taken during the Arteriography are necessary.
Arteriography involves the insertion of a catheter into a large artery and then advancing the catheter in to the carotid artery. When this is done, a dye like substance called contrast agent is injected into the artery and the X - ray pictures are taken. These pictures, known as angiograms, are used to assess the situation. The series of X - ray pictures taken when the contrast agent has passed through the tissues and the venous supply is visualized.
