By Kerry Fitzgerald | Published 02/23/2006 | Hearing |
The used hearing aids were started 20 years ago when people with hearing impairments were hospitalized without their hearing aids. There are two parts of this program. Firstly used hearing aids of all kinds are collected, namely, behind the ear, in the ear, in the canal, and completely in the canal. The hearing aids are inspected and if still it is viable, they are put into working order and given away. If the hearing aid cannot be repaired, it is salvaged to a hearing aid repair shop to be used for parts and thus the association is credited for replacement reconditioned aids. Secondly, the used hearing aids are made available to the hearing impaired that has no other resources for obtaining an instrument.

The registry of Interpreters for the Deaf is a national membership organization of professionals who provide sign language interpreting/transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing persons. It was established in 1964 and incorporated in 1972. It advocates for the increased quality, qualification, and quantity of interpreters through the services. The deaf interpreter-training certificate is a six-quarter program that prepares students to work as interpreters for deaf consumers with special needs and deaf blind consumers. The curriculum includes skills classes and practicums. The program is designed to prepare individuals to work as deaf interpreters in areas such as colleges, public schools or as freelance interpreters.
» Deaf Club
By Kerry Fitzgerald | Published 02/23/2006 | Hearing |
In the past deaf clubs were in a great numbers and these clubs served as places for socializing, swapping information, making deals, getting services, etc. these days the situation is different as people do not meet but they converse on the phone and form their own groups. People believe that believe this is due to TTY/FAX availability - allows Deaf people to conduct social lives (by meeting at homes and exchanging messages on phone lines) without the actual meet. Another important factor is higher education and level of integration with Hearing population and with higher education, there is less need to come to lectures in the Deaf club or to get news in the Club.
