Marijuana Addiction

The High Life

Marijuana addiction is the most common form of drug addiction in the United States.  Marijuana, which is a mixture of stems, seeds, leaves, and flowers from the Cannabis sativa plant.  It can be smoked as a cigarette, in a pipe, or in cigars.  A person with a marijuana addiction will also sometimes brew marijuana as a tea or mix marijuana into food.

A person with a marijuana addiction gets ?high? from the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) chemical that is present in marijuana.  In an attempt to get high, nearly 3 million new users succumb to a marijuana addiction every year.  In fact, research has indicated that over 3 million people with a marijuana addiction use marijuana daily.

The THC present in marijuana, however, causes brain damage to the person with a marijuana addiction.  After being inhaled, the THC moves quickly through the lungs and into the bloodstream.  The THC is then carried to organs throughout the body.

When the THC reaches the brain, certain nerve cells are stimulated.  For the most part, these cells are the ones that influence memory, concentration, pleasure, coordinated movement, thought, and sensory and time perception in the person with a marijuana addiction. This stimulation is what causes the high sought by a person with a marijuana addiction.

Because of its effects on the brain, a marijuana addiction can cause several short-term effects.  Some short-term effects of marijuana addiction include distorted perception, learning and memory difficulty, lack of coordination, thinking and problem solving problems, and an increased heart rate.  This increased heart rate puts the person with the marijuana addiction at a greater risk of having a heart attack

Marijuana addiction also causes an increase in general health problems.  In fact, people with a marijuana addiction have been shown to have an increased number of respiratory illnesses, even if they do not smoke tobacco.  In addition, a marijuana addiction increases the likelihood of developing cancer of the neck, head, and lungs.

In addition to health problems, marijuana addiction can cause a variety of social problems.  Some social problems associated with marijuana addiction include increased anxiety, depression, and personality disturbances.  Furthermore, marijuana addiction increases the likelihood of falling behind on the job or in learning because marijuana inhibits the brains ability to think

Recovering from marijuana addiction can be a long, difficult process, but is necessary to lead a full, happy life.
