What To Expect During Your Recovery From Wisdom Teeth Extractions

One question usually enters your mind before going through wisdom teeth extraction surgery: What will recovery be like? Since many people now get wisdom teeth out between the ages of sixteen and twenty three, it may be the first surgery they experience. Questions of fear and recovery begin flowing into their minds. Recovery from wisdom teeth extractions can be different for all people.

Like most surgeries, some people adapt and recover from wisdom teeth extractions better then others. There are certain situations when this is more likely then others. Wisdom teeth can be in three different states before extraction: fully impacted, partially impacted, or non impacted. Impacted teeth means the teeth have not erupted from the gums yet. Recovery from impacted wisdom teeth extractions is much more difficult then non impacted. Non impacted extractions involve simply pulling a tooth.

Another factor that affects recovery time for wisdom teeth extractions is how old the patient is. The younger the patient, the less developed the wisdom teeth actually are. That means, the roots of the wisdom teeth are not fully formed. When a root of a wisdom tooth is fully formed it must be extracted. When impacted, this root lies very close to a nerve. If harmed during surgery, a patient may no longer have feeling in their chin after recovery. The younger the patient, the less likely that a surgeon will have to cut the root out as well.

Recovery from wisdom teeth extractions also depends on how well a patient can follow instructions. All surgical sites require care. Oral surgeons recommend lightly swishing salt water around the wound for better healing recovery. There are also certain foods one should avoid as well as actions. You should not drink through a straw or smoke.  All of these things could affect the recovery time for your wisdom teeth extraction site.

The extraction of wisdom teeth is a surgery many people experience. All surgeries require proper follow up care for a positive recovery. The recovery time for wisdom teeth extractions depends on many factors including age, and proper follow-up care.
